John Whitehead

John Whitehead, of Kinnelon, born on June 20, 1964, Pequannock, NJ, passed away suddenly on December 5, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, hard work, and love that will continue to resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

John grew up and spent the majority of his life in Kinnelon, beginning his career over 38 years ago with the Kinnelon Department of Public Works, demonstrating his love for the community. He became recognized for his reliability and leadership, and was later on appointed to foreman in 2003 and superintendent in 2006. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, John was honored with the 2024 American Public Works Association award, a testament to his exceptional service, professionalism, and commitment. His work ethic was matched only by his deep love for his family. He was a steadfast provider and an unwavering support for his children, embodying the essence of a devoted family man. Beyond his professional achievements, John was admired for his quiet humility, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. 

John cherished the great outdoors, finding joy through hobbies that included hunting, fishing, and trips to the beach. The beauty of nature nourished his soul, and each moment spent in these activities was a testament to his love for life and exploration.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Chelsea Whitehead, and his son, Kyle Whitehead. Also left to honor his memory are his brother, James Whitehead (Dawn), his sisters, Wanda Speziale and Bonnie Jean Gallopo (Mike), along with five nephews, two nieces, countless cousins and close friends, and his loyal dogs, Jerzy and Sara, who were never far from his side.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Nicole, his mother, Helen (Van Zile) Whitehead, and his father, John Whitehead Sr. Their absence will be felt deeply, yet their memories will forever remain a part of who he was.

As we reflect on John Whitehead’s life, we remember a man whose hard work and dedication shaped not only his community but also his family. His spirit will live on in the love he cultivated and inspire the lives he touched throughout his journey. His absence leaves a void that may never be filled, but his legacy of love and service will endure in the cherished memories he leaves behind. A Celebration of John's life will be held Saturday January 11th, 2024 from 12pm to 2pm at the Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home 86 Bartholdi Ave. Butler, NJ.
