John Whitson Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

John R. Whitson, of Galesburg, IL, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, surrounded by the family who loved him dearly.

Born December 20, 1928, in London, Laurel County, Kentucky, to Walter Whitson and Sudie Elizabeth (Johnson) Whitson, John grew up with a quick wit, a kind heart, and a deep love of music that would follow him throughout his life.

In 1960, John married the love of his life, Sandy (Peterson) Whitson. Together, they built a marriage filled with laughter, music, and devotion that lasted until Sandy's passing in 1997.

John served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 as a communications operator in Korea, stationed along the 38th parallel after completing basic training at Ft. Campbell. Following his service, he began a 32-year career with Burlington Northern Railroad. He approached every day of work with the same quiet dedication and steady presence that shaped every part of his life.

Music was John's lifelong passion. He had a knack for bringing people together through music. Playing the old country classics on his electric guitar, he performed with bands across the Midwest well into his early 90s, making music and memories everywhere he went. He especially cherished the times he played alongside his musical family, filling the room with both music and laughter.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy; his parents, Walter and Sudie Whitson; his brother, Audley Whitson; his sister, Leone Young; and his granddaughter, Arika Ayres.

He is survived by his children, Mike (Diana) Whitson, Cathy Ayres, Lisa Rogan all of Galesburg, Jeff (Stephanie) Whitson of Columbia, South Carolina, and Michele (Dan) Smith of North Liberty, Iowa; grandchildren, Lauren Rogan, Alexa (Megan) Ayres, William (Amber) Rogan, Alex Whitson, Zach Whitson, and Jacob Smith; great-granddaughter, Isabella Rogan; and his sisters, Jackie White, Julie Headford, Georgia Wendland, Janice Firmand, and Cleda Eddy. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss his music, laughter, and stories.

John's family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice Compassus for their excellent care. A special thank you to Rachel Gummerson, lovingly nicknamed, "Radiant Ray" by John himself. Your kindness and care did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Galesburg Chapel with Chaplain Jordan Knight officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 10:00-11:30 am Monday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com
