John E. Wiley, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Saturday August 17, 2024 at Garnet Health Medical Center, surrounded by family. He was 90 years old.
The son of the late John E. and Kathryn (Snyder) Wiley, John was born on June 9, 1934 in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Rye High School in 1952. He earned an Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Westchester Community College.
He served his country in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant. While serving, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Alice (O'Neil) Wiley on November 15, 1958 in Rye, NY. They were married for 66 years.
John ran his business, "Beautiful Woods", for many years and was proud to be referred to as "Logger John" by his customers. He loved the outdoors, antique cars, taking long walks, boating and fishing, listening to bagpipe and classical music, and designing and building machines and structures. He designed and built the family home, a geodesic dome. John was an avid reader and a wealth of information. He was our family "Google search" before Google search existed.
In addition to his loving wife Mary Alice, he is survived by three sons, Todd, Paul and his wife Kathy, and Mark and his wife Margie; he is also survived by three daughters, Kathryn Wiley and her husband Dave Feldman, Laura Nagengast and her husband Joe and Karen Wiley-Acoveno and her husband Mike, and son-in-law Tommy Small; his eleven grandchildren, Tara, Lexie, Katie, Torie, Kelly, Paul, Johanna, Bridget, Eric, Shannon, and Garrett. John was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Suzanne Wiley-Small in 2013.
He will be laid to rest with military honors at Orange County Veterans Cemetery on Friday September 6, 2024 at 2:30 pm.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org), Hospice of Orange & Sullivan County (hospiceoforange.com) or Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue (skylandssanctuary.org).

I will never forget camping in the Wiley back yard (for a summer) and waking up to John welding some new logging invention (like a hydraulic chainsaw) behind the garage. I am very grateful for the Wiley hospitality. Rest in peace John
