John Wingert Obituary

John A. Wingert

May 19, 1958 - July 19, 2025

John Anthony Wingert was born on May 19, 1958, in Harlan, IA to Anthony "Tony" and Rosemary Wingert. He was the fourth of seven children and grew up surrounded by the rhythms of rural life that shaped his strong character and love for agriculture. John began his education in Harlan before his family moved to Shelby, IA. He graduated with the class of 1976, where he was actively involved in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and enjoyed playing football. In 1982, John married Lee Wilson and was blessed to become the father to her children-David, Jennifer, and Paula. His passion for agriculture took root early through chores and fieldwork, blossoming into a lifelong dedication. John spent years farming and later transitioned to hauling grain, a role that kept him close to the land he loved. John enjoyed spending time with family and sharing a cold beer with friends. Known for his quick wit and candid nature, you never had to guess what he was thinking-John spoke his mind and stood firm in who he was. He was rarely seen without one of his two loyal sidekicks-his grandson Spencer or his beloved dog and semi passenger, Voo Doo. Whether working the land or riding the highways, their company brought him joy and grounded him in the things that mattered most. John passed away July 19, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha due to complications of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, devotion to family, and an unwavering spirit. He is survived by his son, David (Jessie) Wilson of Council Bluffs, daughters, Jennifer Maurer of Las Vegas, NV, Paula Burnison of Shelby, IA; grandchildren, Spencer Petersen, Adam Wilson, Kira Wilson, Brayden Burnison, and Brienna Skye Indermuhle; brother, Larry Wingert of Elk Horn, IA; sisters, Sue Ellen Mills of La Junta, CO, Sara (Rich) Schmit of Fremont, NE and sister-in-law, Jan Wingert of Shelby, IA. John was preceded in death by his father Anthony (2012), mother Rosemary (2021), brother Neil (2010), and sisters Christina (1970) and Marilyn Ford (2021).
