John J. Wissing, 82, of Longboat Key, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2025. Born on February 28, 1943, in the Bronx, New York, to Gertrude and George Wissing, John grew up in the Bronx before moving to Crestwood, New York, where he lived for many years and raised his family. He later retired to Florida. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice before beginning a distinguished 20-year career with the New York City Police Department. After retiring from the NYPD, he embarked on a successful career in business, where his integrity, perseverance, and work ethic left a lasting impression on all who knew him. John will be remembered as a gentle giant, admired for his kindness and generosity, larger-than-life heart, quick sense of humor, incredible golf swing, and unwavering devotion to his family. He cherished time with his golfing buddies, dear friends, and loved ones - especially when gathered around the table sharing meals and wine together. He and his beloved wife and soulmate, Joan, traveled the world, building memories across 61 years of marriage. Through every joy and challenge, they supported one another and were truly each other's rock. John's greatest pride was his role as a husband, father, and grandfather, lovingly known as "Papa." A devoted New York sports fan, he especially loved cheering on the Yankees and Giants. Golf was his lifelong passion, which included many memorable rounds with the Friars during his 30 years at the Longboat Key Club. For John, golf was more than a game - it was about the laughter, friendships, and connections that enriched his life. John is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Sheridan); his brother, Gary Wissing; his children, Jennifer (Peter) McGahren and Jason (Mindy) Wissing; and his cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Keri-Leigh, Bryce, and Shane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and George Wissing; his brother, George A. Wissing; and his sister, Trudy Wilster. A celebration of John's life will be held in early 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the National Blood Clot Alliance to support Factor V Leiden and blood clotting disorder research. Gifts can be made online at www.stoptheclot.org/donate-to-nbca by selecting "Tribute Gift" and entering his name.
