John S. Wiswall

John Shelton Wiswall age 59, of Newark, Delaware, passed away at his home on June 16, 2023.
John, the youngest of 5 boys, was born on July 24,1963 in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Brandywine High School in 1982 and from the University of Southern Maine in 1987.
Before age 2, John was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a disease he dealt with throughout his life. Despite having his hips and knees replaced twice and never being able to walk without the aid of crutches, he earned the rank of BSA Eagle Scout. He worked in the IT field until late into his 40's and lived independently until his death.
John was recognized by the National Arthritis Foundation as poster child of the year. He met with President Ronald Reagan to declare April as National Arthritis month and bring awareness to the disease. John's positive spirit, can-do attitude and refusal to let his life be defined by his medical condition were an inspiration to all who were fortunate to know him.
John was a gentle soul who loved animals and nature. He maintained numerous bird feeders and a landscape designed to attract and feed the local wildlife. He looked forward to summer vacations on Kezar Lake in Maine where he was a cherished member of the local community. He enjoyed the spectacular views and did his best to control the fish population. He loved his family and many close friends deeply and treasured the time spent with them.
John was preceded in death by his parents Charles Gilbert and Doris (Jack) Wiswall and brother Mark. He is survived by brothers Gil, George and Stuart and their families, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. His genuine love and concern for others will be sorely missed.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, June 24 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.
