Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCrery & Harra Funeral Home and Crematory - Concord Pike on Feb. 9, 2026.
Martin P. Murray, Sr., of
Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the age of 92.
Marty was born and raised in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Patrick and Anna (O'Hara) Murray, who immigrated to America from County Mayo, Ireland, and Bathgate, Scotland.
Marty graduated from West Catholic High School in 1951. Marty proudly served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Munich, Germany, during the Korean War. Then, he worked for General Electric in South Philadelphia, retiring at the young age of 57.
Some of Marty's fondest memories were on the Wildwood boardwalk with his closest buddies. He used to share that he could go to the shore with $10 and have enough money for a hotel room and drinks. Wildwood is also where he met the love of his life, Florence (Floss) Braun. Floss and Marty celebrated 62 years of marriage this past September and watched their first granddaughter marry on the same date in 2025. Marty and Floss raised their family in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, before eventually settling in
Wilmington, Delaware. He was proud to raise his four children in the new neighborhood, Beacon Hill.
A man of simple pleasures, Marty's life centered on family, friendship, basketball, and hard work. Marty lived an uncomplicated life, and his family meant everything to him. He was especially proud of his seven grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
Marty cherished vacations in Sea Isle City, Wildwood Crest, and Florida. An avid traveler, Marty held wonderful memories of trips to China, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, and Alaska, proudly telling anyone who would listen that he had walked on the Great Wall of China.
Most of Marty's days were spent at Talley, on the basketball court, joining pickup games for hours, and always asking for just one more game. He made so many incredible friendships on those courts. A natural athlete, he excelled in basketball, football, and baseball. As he aged and could no longer play, he still drove to the park every day, watching the players, listening to his transistor radio, and making friends of all ages. He had a way of befriending everyone, especially those who were struggling, and he always treated them with kindness and respect.
He adored his sisters, Nancy and Noreen, and always looked forward to Fourth of July celebrations at the Danze house. Marty shared a special bond with his brother Joe Murray, spending countless weekends in their younger years at dances and parties.
Remarkably, Marty lived all 92 years without an iPhone or iPad. Despite this, he maintained lifelong friendships and enjoyed great health. As he often said, "If you have your health, you have your first million dollars." Even in his final days, he reminded his caregiver, "I'm in overtime, and life is good!"
His kindness, simplicity, and generosity will leave a lasting imprint on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Marty was preceded in death by his siblings Joseph, John, and James Murray, and his brother-in-law, Carmen Danze.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Floss; his siblings, Nancy (Alphonse) Carbonara and Noreen Danze; and his sister-in-law, Carol Murray. His children and their spouses will dearly miss him: Maureen (Mark) Gallagher, Debbie (George) Stuebing, Marty Murray, Jr., and Kristine (Brian) Acker. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Kelly (Connor), Mark (Abby), Emily and Ally, Lauren, Brianna, and Julia.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road,
Wilmington, Delaware. A Christian Mass will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be held privately.
The family would like to thank the caregivers who took amazing care of Marty during his final weeks. A special thank you to Compassionate Care Hospice for their compassion and support during such a difficult time.
