John Eldon Yost, a respected family man and dedicated worker, passed away on January 12, 2026, at the age of 92 in
Morgantown, WV. Born on February 24, 1933, in Hagans, WV, John led a life marked by commitment, service, and the love of the outdoors.
John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. His patriotism was echoed throughout his life, as he often shared stories of his service with his children and grandchildren. After his military tenure, he embarked on a career with C&P Phone Company. John worked as a cable splicer for over three decades, a tenure highlighted by his remarkable record of perfect attendance.
John found tranquility and joy in gardening, a hobby through which he cultivated after growing up on the family farm. Birdwatching was another of his pastimes, as he marveled at the beauty of the feathered creatures that visited his home.
John was a participant in his church community at Kingdom: A Community Church. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in his daily pursuits and in his relationships with others.
He is survived by a loving and extensive family. His children, Kelly Michael (Pepe) of Fairmont, Jeff Yost (Cindy) of
Oak Island, NC, John Douglas Yost of Rivesville, and Michael Yost (Sally) of Fairmont, remember him as an inspiring role model. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Shelli Martin (David) of
Hinton, WV and David Johnson (Cindy) of Florida. John's legacy continues through the lives of his adoring grandchildren, Jeffrey Yost, Jr., Douglas Yost, Daniel Yost, Jessica Kepinski, Garrett Michael, Evan Michael, Brendan Michael, Brittney Michael, Aundrea Rieke, Matthew Yost, Shannon Yost, Christopher Yost, Scott Johnson, Maxon Johnson, and Kyle McIntyre, as well as his several great-grandchildren who revered their grandfather's kind spirit and gentle guidance. He is also survived by his sister Neva Stull of Clarksburg. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Freda Yost, his parents, Meryl Yost and Pearl Armstrong Yost, and his siblings, June Whetzel and James Yost.
Family and friends are invited to gather in McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Westover, WV on Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 10 am until the funeral service begins at 12 pm with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating. Following the service, John will be laid to rest at Beverly Hill Cemetery with full military honors conferred by Westover VFW #9916 and WVANG Military Honors, Camp Dawson.
