DATELINE: ONSTED, MICHIGAN
John Anthony Zammit, age 88, died peacefully on January 20, 2024, at his home in Irish Hills, Michigan. He is survived by his five children Timari (Deane), John (Jay) Zammit II, Trina (Cofer), Tricia (Segar), Joseph Zammit and siblings Catherine, Josephine, and Antonette. He is preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Carmela, spouse Sue (Clark), spouse Judy (Giedra) and siblings Frank, Pio Peter, Mary Louise, and Thomas. His greatest legacy and pride is his 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Born 1935 in Detroit from parents who immigrated from Malta, he graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in 1953. He began his career with General Motors delivering mail while attending General Motors Institute to become an industrial engineer. He retired after 39 years of service with his final role of Plant Engineer at the Flint Assembly Plant. His crowning achievement was designing, patenting and building the "Flying Nun" which was a machine that hovered over and adhered vinyl tops on Cadillacs. Throughout his life he was always coming up with new ideas, designing blueprints, and meticulously creating models of his inventions and dreams. His love of music and keeping up with the latest technology through which to listen to it was his special hobby. He also had great love and compassion for dogs and cats, especially those that were not treated well or were abandoned.
Above all, John was devoted to his faith having been an altar boy in his youth, teaching catechism as a young adult, and singing in the choir in his later years where he faithfully attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh. John was a fervent proselytizer of his faith wherever he went. He loved doing random acts of kindness for strangers and advocated fervently for those who were unjustly treated. He lived his faith to the very end.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on February 23, 2024, at St. Elizebeth, 506 N. Union St,
Tecumseh, MI 49286. Visitation will begin an hour prior, and a luncheon will be provided in the parish hall following the service where those who feel so inclined will have an opportunity to share a brief memory of John to add to the celebration of his life and to the comfort of his family.
A short committal service will be held Easter weekend on March 30, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. in a chapel at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery before proceeding to the gravesite for burial at 25800 W. 10 Mile Rd, Southfield. MI, 48033.
