It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Johnnie Joseph Williams Jr., affectionately known as Jack, who went to be with the Lord on December 24, 2025, at the age of 87.
Jack was born on November 1, 1938, in
Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Throughout his life, he lived in North Carolina and Texas, places he proudly called home.
A man of strong faith and deep devotion to his family, Jack lived a life rooted in compassion, kindness, and quiet strength. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and his greatest joy was time spent with those he loved.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie Joseph Williams Sr. and Myrtle Williams, and by his brothers Eugene Williams and Robert Williams.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Davetta Smith Williams, of Texas; son Johnnie Joseph "Jay" Williams III, of Texas; daughter Melanie Williams Cooper and her husband Chris of Texas; granddaughter Danica Cooper of Texas; sister Doril Henderson, of North Carolina; and many beloved nieces and nephews, along with extended family members.
One of the great joys of Jack's life was his marriage to his wife, Davetta. High school sweethearts who shared the same birthdate, their 67-year marriage reflected a partnership built on love, devotion, and a lifelong habit of putting family and friends first.
Jack was a lifelong sports enthusiast, especially a devoted Duke Blue Devils fan. In his younger years, he played football in both high school and college, a passion for athletics that stayed with him throughout his life. He was also an avid golfer, proudly recording three hole-in-ones over the years. Among the many courses he played, St. Andrews in Scotland held special meaning for him.
He loved to travel with family and friends and approached life with an adventurous spirit, always eager to explore new places and create lasting memories. At home, he enjoyed playing bridge, sharing laughter, conversation, and friendly competition with those around the table. An accomplished home chef, Jack was happiest when preparing a meal or sharing a laugh with family and friends.
Some of the most cherished memories of Jack center on his role as a grandfather. He doted on his granddaughter Danica, taking her to the park, enjoying daily walks together, and savoring the simple moments that meant the most. Those who knew him will remember his welcoming smile, quick wit, and the steady presence he brought into every room.
Jack also enjoyed a long and respected professional career rooted in faith and service. He served as a United Methodist Church minister and later as an Associate Director with the Duke Endowment in the rural church division, where his work focused on supporting rural churches and strengthening the communities they served. A man of strong faith, he was also a devout participant in the North Carolina Mental Health Association, reflecting his lifelong commitment to compassion, care, and service to others. He later worked in the insurance and financial services industry, where he was known for his integrity, wisdom, and genuine care for the people he served.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of faith, family, adventure, and kindness will live on through the many lives he touched.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers who provided comfort and support, including Katie, Dorcas, and Chaplain Steve at Dallas Hospice, Teddy at Autumn of Life Home Care, and Addie, Marie, and Hilda at Synergy Home Care.
A private memorial service for Jack will be held via Zoom at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when available.
