Johnny Green, 78, met his Lord and Savior face to face on August 28, 2025. If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, he looks forward to greeting you upon your arrival at the end of your earthly days.
Johnny was born on March 9, 1947 to Howard Lee Green and Velma Glenadean (Riddle) Green in San Angelo, Texas.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kay Green Trainer.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of almost 58 years, Lora Jane (Largent) Green. He is also survived by his 2 sons Trey and wife, Leigh Anne of Waco, TX and John and wife, Lauren of Clarksville, TN.; seven grandchildren, Mattie Green, Camryn Green, Lora Green, Lydia Green, Jonah Green, Katelyn Saltzman and Emma Saltzman; two great grandchildren, Wrenn Stroud and Miller Stroud.
Johnny moved to Abilene as a toddler and grew up there. He attended Cooper High School where he excelled in athletics, specifically baseball and basketball and being a great friend. He went to Hardin-Simmons University on a basketball scholarship, playing on the team when our previous pastor, Glenn Ward, was the team trainer, and graduated with a degree in business management.
His career was spent as a Regional Engineer for BJ Hughes, an oil well servicing company and a mid-life career change to become the leading sales representative for Sahara Sportswear, selling to coaches and teams in high schools and colleges as well as to golf pro shops.
Johnny was an avid collector who had a kind, loving, and generous heart. Just some of his activities included being a pecan gatherer and sharer with others, Dept. 56 collector, baseball card and record collector, book and media collector. He was well known as the "book guy" from hosting a massive bi-annual media garage sale in his front driveway. If he knew what kind of books you liked, he kept an eye out for them at garage sales, bought them and gave them to you. He served as a volunteer at the after-school store for many years. He enjoyed flower gardening despite having to compete against deer eating the blooms. He treated his bluebonnets as his babies and weeded out anything that dared to grow-up in them. He served several years as a referee and local radio commentator for GHS basketball alongside David Youker.
One of his greatest joys in life was serving his Lord and Savior by serving God's people in his church, Acton Baptist Church. He served many years as a deacon and was instrumental in starting the WEE School to serve the community, donating books to help build up the church library, starting the greeting committee, arriving early to make coffee so it would be ready when people arrived, straightening the sanctuary in prep for Sunday services. His greatest joy and gift was welcoming everyone who came to services, members and visitors alike, striving to make every person, young or old feel right a home in our church family, as he wore his many colors of sport coats collected during his sales rep. days.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but I feel sure he is waiting with outstretched hands to welcome his brothers and sisters in Christ – right after the meet their Savior face to face.
