The world just got a little quieter-and a lot less charming-with the passing of John, age 76, who slipped his moorings one final time on April 12th. A man who spent his early days beneath the waves in the Navy and the rest of his life rising to the surface with a joke, an old story, and a handshake, John never met a stranger-only future friends.
Born in Akron, OH, he joined the Navy right out of high school, serving aboard submarines where he learned the value of teamwork, resourcefulness, humor, and knowing when to duck. After trading in his sea legs for a sales briefcase, John spent much of his time working and developing expertise in the tooling industry, which laid the foundation that John used to eventually start his own business.
But perhaps his proudest achievement wasn't nautical, or professional, or his USGA handicap-it was personal. With 28 years of sobriety, John was a true example of strength, humility, and second chances. He never missed an opportunity to genuinely extend a helping hand to someone walking a similar path. His coin collection may not have been worth much to a collector, but each one marked another year of hard-won dedication and service to others.
John leaves behind a legacy of laughter, tall tales, great golf shots, and a firm belief that a good life is measured not in years, but in memories that make the struggles and setbacks of life worthwhile.
Fair winds and following seas, sailor. You may now rest your oars. You were one of a kind.
A memorial service will be held on May 2nd at Johns Island Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm. The service will be live streamed via the church's website should you not be able to attend in person. In lieu of anything, we ask that you bring a memory to share. If you feel inclined to do something, please consider donating to the Any Length Recovery Community.
