Johnny Mays Obituary

Johnny Edward Mays, 61, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away on August 8, 2025, leaving behind a trail of kindness, laughter, and stories worth retelling. Born May 10, 1964, in Nansemond County, Virginia, Johnny was the son of William Edward Mays Jr. and Ruby Stanley, who surely welcomed him home with open arms.

Johnny grew up in Newport News and attended Ferguson High School. If you knew him back then, you probably remember the sight of a tall, grinning teenager with a boombox balanced on his shoulder, the soundtrack of his life spilling out for everyone to hear. Music, friends, and an easy smile-that was Johnny.

Throughout his life, Johnny had a gift for making people feel at ease. He was tender-hearted, a kind soul, and the kind of person who made friends in the checkout line. He worked hard, often in retail, where his patience and sense of humor turned customers into regulars and coworkers into lifelong friends. Norfolk was where he built most of his adult life, surrounded by a community that loved him as much as he loved them.

He is survived by his four siblings, his aunt, and a countless circle of friends who will miss his warmth, quick wit, and the way he never seemed to meet a stranger.

Johnny's life was one of connection, loyalty, and quiet strength. No services are scheduled at this time. Johnny's family asks that memorial donations be made to Pancreatic Cancer Research, in the hope that others might have more time with the people they love.
