February 1, 1940 – June 25, 2025
Johnny Benson Nesmith, 85, of Hanceville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025. Born in Ogden, Utah, Johnny lived a life marked by unwavering dedication to public service, a distinguished career in law enforcement, and a deep love for family and fellowship.
Johnny earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Athens State University, laying the foundation for his remarkable career. He began his service in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he developed a strong sense of duty. Following his military service, Johnny joined the Alabama State Police, serving as a trooper for 25 years with steadfast commitment to protecting his community. His skill and dedication led him to specialized training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, after which he was promoted to Investigator with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's plainclothes division. His investigative work made significant contributions to public safety.
After retiring from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Johnny continued his passion for justice as a private investigator in Alabama for 12 years. Even in retirement, he remained deeply connected to his law enforcement roots, finding great joy in fellowship with fellow officers and maintaining his skills by qualifying on the shooting range for many years. Beyond his professional life, Johnny was an avid tennis player and golfer, finding camaraderie and relaxation in these pursuits.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, Kay Nesmith; his daughter, Shannon Clemmons (Sam); his son, Dr. Chad B. Nesmith(Hilda); his brother, Ted G. Nesmith; and his cherished grandchildren, Sawyer Clemmons (Abigail), Riley Clemmons, and Madelyn Clemmons.
Johnny will be remembered for his integrity, his service to others, and the enduring legacy he leaves in his family and community. His life reminds us of the power of dedication, connection, and second chances.
A funeral service will be held at Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Vinemont, Alabama, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with visitation at the church from 1:00 PM.
Cullman Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
