I put a comment in, but don´t know if it went through. Joi was Joi. There is nothing to say other than that. She and I became friends while we were observing and learning about an innovative housing project. She was so engaged with the residents and so loving towards everyone-Including me. She was a gift and this is a great loss. I send my sympathies to all of her family and good friends. There´s not much you can say.

Joi showed up on that Joi way to learn about Community First Village in Austin, a very successful community of formerly unhoused people. I was her trailer mate next door, also on a learning mission, and watched her engage the residents and just be Joi. There is no one like her. All from that big open heart of hers...what a gift and what a loss.

I now work at The Journey Home, a nonprofit Joi held dear, but I met her years ago while working at Andrew Jackson's Hermitage. She had toured that day and wanted to get input about implementing an idea at The Historic Sam Davis Home in Smyrna where she was involved. She didn't know who to speak with at The Hermitage, or where to find help, but she asked around until she learned my name as VP of Development and how to find the little building where my office was located. We had a wonderful visit and I shared information that she appreciated. She then invited me to visit the Sam Davis Home and extended great hospitality during that visit. We stayed in touch for a while and I was always impressed by her graciousness, enthusiasm, and dedication to causes that struck a chord with her. I've always remembered her determination to find me on the day of our first meeting at The Hermitage. Not just anyone would have taken the time and effort to ask enough questions to end up finding me so she could get her own questions answered. She was a special person! I am so sorry that I did not act quickly in reaching out to her after I came to The Journey Home a few months ago - a reminder that there's no time like the present to reconnect with someone we've admired.
