Jon Burnett Obituary

Jon Burnett (Jonathan Haynes, Jr.), 71, died on Feb. 20, 2025, after dealing with neurodegenerative disorders for many years. Jon was most proud of his dearly loved family, wife, Debbie; children, Samantha and Eric and their spouses, Brett and Erinn; his grandchildren, Eli, Caroline, Nathaniel, Shepherd, and Locke; his mother and father, Nancy and Jon, Sr.; brother, David; sister, Martha Rudder; and other extended family members. He was additionally proud of his 41-year award-winning television career, being an Eagle Scout, and playing football at Bearden High School and The University of Tennessee in his hometown of Knoxville. Most recently, he was proud of raising awareness about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and the National Sports Brain Bank (NSBB) at The University of Pittsburgh through stories which aired on KDKA-TV. The stories resulted in more than 100 new brain donation pledges to the NSBB. Jon's family would like to thank the many family members and friends who support and love us. We also want to thank his caregivers, who have become our dear friends, and his doctors and Family House hospice team, who provided excellent and compassionate care. Jon's memorial and celebration of life service is for all of his friends and family. The event will be live streamed and also recorded for later viewing for those who are unable to attend in person. Professional services entrusted to THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, LTD.; 930 Center Ave., Blawnox, PA 15238, www.thomasmsmithfuneralhome.com. On March 7, please visit Thomas M. I was crossing Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield one day, when a car pulled up and lowered their window to ask me for directions to a place called the pleasure bar two blocks down the street. When I started giving directions to the driver, I noticed that it was Jon Burnett. Not used to seeing TV personalities, with the exception of Nick Perry, whose mother lived in Morningside, and Bill Burns who used to get his haircut by my grandfather at Gateway Center number two in the 60's, were my only two TV celebrities encountered in my life. Jon was very thankful of my directions and I informed him that I watch him on TV all the time. He said thanks and went on his way. Just a little encounter that I had with Jon may the Lord bless him and welcome him to his kingdom

I knew Jon from years ago at Bearden High School. We were both in the choir there. He was such a versatile man and a true leader at our school. A few years ago I was in touch with him concerning a job for my niece, who lived in Pittsburgh at the time. Jon very graciously invited her to lunch and a tour of his TV studio. I was so impressed with his caring, generous nature. I pray for peace for Debbie and his family during this difficult time. He was very loved and so admired by so many throughout his life. Rest In Peace, Jon.

I was lucky enough to work with Jon in Louisville, then be in the same city and get together occasionally with him and Debbie in Pittsburgh as well. What a great friend, and husband and family man. God speed Jon. Hope I see you again my friend. Love to all those left behind, I know it leaves a huge void in their lives.

I was a fan of Jon's from the time he came Evening Magazine. My mother, dad and me had a chance encounter with him and a camara crew on a very chilly August afternoon on a beach at Presque Isle Erie in the early 80's. Jon was doing a story about wind surfing. I can never forget the time and the kindness he
showed to my parents and me. My deepest sympathy.

Although I wasn´t blessed to have come face to face with "JB", I grew up with him in our living room everyday. As I got older I began to truly understand and appreciate the moments of reprieve, smiles & laughter he brought to the newscasts and to my day by just being the genuinely special and good hearted person he was. When he wasn´t there, he was missed and when he retired I cried. I lost my Dad suddenly in 2016 & his jovial personality was often the only thing that brought a smile to my face while in a very dark place. His goodness and how he made me & I´m sure many feel will never be forgotten. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with you during this enormous loss Please find comfort in your memories

Never met Jon...never talked with Jon. Yet I am in tears over his passing. THAT is the kind of impact and connection he made around here immediately. We've lost "family". He was truly a "Good Guy!" My prayers to his family...my prayer that Jon is making heaven laugh. R.I.P.

Jon was a pleasure to know. He always made me smile, especially when I think of the wonderful weather assembly that he did for our second graders. Thank you Jon and thanks to his family for sharing this talented man.
