Jon served in the Army from 1970 to 1972, reaching the rank of captain and receiving a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation among other accolades. After an honorable discharge, he continued his dedication to public service by joining the Springfield First Aid Department and later started at the Police Academy in 1974. Jon retired as Captain of the Detective Bureau of the City of Eizabeth Police Department in 2010 after 36 years of service. He was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the NJ State Retired Officers, Local 600 PBA, The Tennessee Squire, and the University of Tennessee Alumni Association.

Jon had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and loved attending races with his family. Jon could always be found sitting on the couch watching a network police procedural like CSI, Law & Order, or NCIS. Jon had many cats throughout his life that were very important to him, and he donated to the Animal Medical Center in New York City in Susan's name. As a firearm enthusiast, Jon enjoyed shooting at the range. He and his brother Bill worked as security police at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He was also proud of his Scottish heritage and participated in the Scottish Games. Jon was respected and honored by those who knew him, especially the Elizabeth Police Department and his family and lifelong friends, and he will be dearly missed.
