Jona M. Shell, a beacon of love and laughter to all who knew her, passed away on April 14, 2025, at the age of 83, in
Rensselaer, Indiana. Born on March 20, 1942, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jona was the cherished daughter of the late Henry and Ella Phelps. Throughout her life, Jona's radiant spirit and selfless nature touched the hearts of countless individuals.
Jona's journey through life was marked by her dedication to her family, her work, and her community. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her three adoring children: Judy (Dennis) Black, Raymond Shell, and Betty Alson. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her three grandchildren, Dennis Black (Brandy Rogers), Melissa Carroll (Payton Hammond), and Bryce Black (Zoe Slosser), as well as her twelve great-grandchildren: Brodie, Booklynn, Brayleigh, Eli, Bransen, Britton, Max, Eli, Bo, Camilla, Telsa, and Luci.
Jona was a beloved sister to her two brothers, Terry (Deloris) Phelps and Timothy (Cheryl) Phelps, and her three sisters, Lida Gordon, Ruby Easterday, and Linda Sizemore. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Henry Phelps, Jr., Darrell Phelps, infant brother Bobby Phelps, Henritta Loveall, Alice Cotner, and Betty Phelps.
Professionally, Jona was known for her unwavering commitment and compassionate service to others. She worked at Schultz's Family Store, where her warm smile and helpful nature were as much a staple as the goods she sold. For over 25 years, Jona served as the assistant director of the Crisis Center, where her efforts made a significant impact on the lives of those in need. Her passion for service extended to her involvement with the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #29, where she was a revered member.
Jona's interests and hobbies were a reflection of her joyful and loving character. She found great pleasure in word search puzzles, a pastime that provided her with moments of tranquility and contentment. Above all, Jona cherished the time spent with her family, creating memories that would become treasured stories to be passed down through generations.
Described by those who knew her as loving, funny, and selfless, Jona's presence was a source of comfort and joy. Her laughter was infectious, her heart generous, and her ability to make everyone feel special was a gift that will be deeply missed.
Jona's life was a testament to the power of love and the importance of family. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of her embrace and the kindness of her spirit.
As we bid farewell to Jona, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with her and the lessons she taught us through her example of selflessness and humor. Her love story, written in the lives of her family and friends, will be read with fondness and cherished forevermore.
