Jose Cruz, 85, of Deltona, Florida passed away on May 24, 2025. He was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico on August 27, 1939.
Jose is survived by his wife, Carmen E. Monserrate; his daughter, Doris I. Leal; his sons, Joe and Jaison Cruz; his five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
After high school, he became a Merchant Marine before joining the United States Navy, and eventually the United States Army. He served in the military in one form or another from 1961 to 1967. After he left the miliary service, he went to New York City and became a chef at the New York Stock Exchange. After many years of working at the Stock Exchange, he returned to Puerto Rico to open several businesses, such as a bar and restaurant, a supermarket, and a night club with his wife, Carmen. Together, they finally decided to retire, and came to Deltona, Florida to be closer to their daughter, Doris. He loved dancing, playing dominos, traveling, and cooking until the end. Jose loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jose's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Sabrina Snyder for offering her medical expertise, guidance, and strength while Jose battled dementia.
If anyone would like to make a difference for those with dementia, please make online gifts in memory of Jose, to the Dementia Society of America.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Jose on June 20, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Iglesia Agape, located at 671 North State Road 415, Osteen, FL 32764.
