HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Jose Andre de Melo, 79, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1983, died on December 28, 2022 at home.
Son of the late David Andre and Delfina (Augusta) de Melo, he was born on June 17, 1943 in Portugal where he lived until he was 17. Jose then moved to Brazil until he immigrated to New Rochelle, New York, US in 1966.
He spent his career in the construction industry as a member of Local #60 in Westchester County and had retired as Foreman from Morano Construction. An avid wine maker, Jose also enjoyed hunting. A lifelong soccer fan and player, he was an exceptional goalie for many years on teams in Westchester County. More than anything, he will be remembered as a hardworking man who loved his family.
On September 6, 1969 at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle, Jose married Elza de Melo who survives at home after 54 years of marriage. He is also survived by his sons, Joseph DeMelo of Hopewell Junction, Robert DeMelo and his wife Maria of Hopewell Junction, and John de Melo and his wife Nikki of Boston, MA; his grandchildren who will miss their Vovô, Gabriella, Delphina, Andrew, Sophia, Amelia, Eliana, and Ada; his sister, Judite Ramos and her husband Nelson of Mechanicsville, VA; his sister-in-law, Maria Melo; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, Jose was also predeceased by his brother, David Melo.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 2 – 6 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday at 10 am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
