Jose J. De Melo

Age 82, of Portage, passed away at Medilodge of Portage surrounded by loved ones. Jose was born on September 13, 1942, in Lomba de Maia, San Miguel Azores, Portugal, the son of the late Jose M. Catunto and Amelia Do Carmo Melo. Jose was kind, loving and selfless and he will be missed by all who loved him. While she was vacationing in Bermuda, he met the love of his life, Janet, and on May 7, 1966, they were united in marriage and enjoyed 58 years together. They made their home in Southwest Michigan and Jose worked hard as a machinist to provide a happy home. They raised two children who are the pride and joy of their life. When not working, Jose was passionate about rebuilding automobiles, loved caring for his animals on the family farm, traveled and went on many adventures with Janet; he also enjoyed antiquing and was an avid WWF wrestling fan. Jose had a strong faith and was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church. Above all Jose loved his family and his friends. His smile, laughter and joy for life will be remembered. He is survived by his loving wife Janet (Fortier) de Melo; two children, Antonio de Melo and Teresa (Larry) Harwood; a brother, Claude de Melo; extended family and friends.
