Gaffney -- José Figueroa lived a life guided by God's true way of life, marked by resilience, purpose, and adherence to Christ's command to love others as Christ loves us. Born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, and raised in the neighborhoods of the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, José charted an extraordinary path from humble beginnings to national service and academic distinction. In 1974, José was selected to participate in the prestigious A Better Chance program in New York, which identifies and supports high-achieving students of color. Through this opportunity, he earned a scholarship to attend Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield, Massachusetts, where he distinguished himself as a gifted and driven student. His academic journey continued with a full scholarship to Middlebury College in Vermont, awarded in part for his exceptional performance on the Spanish Language SATs, where he earned a near-perfect score.
José proudly served in the United States Navy, completing five tours at sea aboard the USS St. Josephus Daniels (CG-27). He held a rare distinction as the only dual air intercept controller aboard the ship-a skill shared only with the Chief. Together, they were the only two onboard capable of skillfully managing both helicopter and fighter jet operations. His exemplary service earned him an official commendation from the Navy.
Following his military career, José devoted himself to education and community service. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from William Paterson University and later earned a graduate degree with the same honors from Kutztown University. His teaching career began in Paterson, New Jersey, where he taught for nine years, followed by 22 years in various high schools throughout the state. He later continued teaching in Charlotte, North Carolina;
Gaffney, South Carolina; and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Though his military and educational accomplishments were impressive, José considered his greatest achievement to be his spiritual journey. He became a baptized member of God's true way of life in August 1990 and remained devoted to his faith for 35 years. José and his beloved wife, Julia, shared these values and passed them on to their six children. He was a dedicated member of the Living Church of God in
Gaffney, South Carolina.
José Figueroa's legacy is one of unwavering faith, dedication, intellectual excellence, and steadfast service to God and family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege and honor to know him.
He is survived by the love of his life, Julia Figueroa; their six children; and twelve cherished grandchildren. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of José, please visit our Tree Store.
