John Mulcahy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel - Knoxville on Feb. 16, 2026.
John E. "Jack" Mulcahy, age 99, was born in Peabody, Massachusetts, and passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026.

Jack was a loving, caring, and remarkable man who will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was known for his kindness, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Doris Mulcahy; his brother, Jim; his sister, Peggy; and the love of his life, Marion, his wife of 63 years.

A proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Jack served as a radarman aboard a U.S. Minesweeper and stationed in Pearl Harbor. Following his military service, he attended Middlebury College, where he lettered in three sports and distinguished himself in baseball. Upon graduating, he was drafted by the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves) and played professionally for two years before a career-ending injury brought his time in baseball to an end.

Jack went on to build a successful career in the insurance industry, which ultimately brought him to Knoxville, Tennessee. In his later years, he enjoyed investing in real estate and remained active well into his retirement years.

He is survived by his son, Michael Mulcahy of Manhattan Beach, California, and his two granddaughters, Monica Mulcahy and Macall Mulcahy - both of Dallas, Texas - who were his absolute pride and joy.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff and friends at The Lodge at Shannondale Retirement Community and to UT Hospice for their compassion, care, and support.

Jack often said he felt very blessed with good fortune throughout his life, believing that luck had smiled on him - "I'd rather be lucky than smart," he would always say.

A private family interment will be held at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Mulcahy family and invites you to view and sign the online registry.

We lived next door to Mr. & Mrs. Mulcahy, & Mike for many years in Sherwood Forest. One couldn“t ask for better neighbors, & just good people, that we considered friends. Mike & family, please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss. May your years of memories bring all of you comfort now, & in the future.
My sincerest sympathies,
Cindy Schroer Ryan
