He later became a heavy equipment operator for the NMDOT. He worked for NMDOT for over 25 years where he later retired.

Jose is preceded by his father Jose A. Martinez Sr. (Abe). He is also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Conrado and Escolastica (Lala) Martinez. His maternal grandparents Luis and Porfiria Montoya. Just recently his Aunt Victoria Martinez and Art Pacheco.

He is survived by his children Ashleigh and Dominik Ickes of Dodge City, KS and their children Brekyn and Bronx. Aaron Martinez and girlfriend Amber Chavez of Moriarty, NM. Jose was an active member of his community where he served on the Fair board as a member and an officer, EMT, Fire Chief and Coach. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was a very proud member of the Sons of American Legion.

Jose loved playing in the family band (La Banda Seria), he played the guitar and drums. Jose would tell everyone about the band and how much he enjoyed playing drums. He was great at operating heavy equipment, he competed and won many of the Equipment Rodeos held by the NMDOT at both the District and State level. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid horseshoe player, Corn hole and Dart player, he loved the competition. He was very intelligent and talented, he could fix just about anything, and he could rebuild computers for fun. He was a great mechanic and excellent at electrical work. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan; his Sunday schedule was made around the Dallas Cowboy games. He was so happy he was able to see his beloved Cowboys in Arlington, TX. He was also a Texas Longhorns and Lakers fan. Jose loved to be surrounded by friends and family, everyone has a memory of him, and the laughter shared. He had so many friends, he would make a friend anywhere he went, and he made a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Although Jose had many friends and family surround him, his greatest times were spent with his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of Ashleigh and Aaron. He would tell everyone about his children being great at many things, but mostly that they were great hunters.
