Jose Angel Mercado, age 79, was born on July 13, 1946, in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and entered eternal rest on August 28, 2025, in Houston, Texas.
Jose was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was known for his deep love, unwavering generosity, and constant care for his family. His presence brought warmth to every room, and his sense of humor and honesty left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He had a passion for golf, enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams, and rarely missed a boxing match. Jose also had a great appreciation for his wife’s home-cooked meals and always stayed informed by keeping up with the news — often becoming the family's go-to source for current events.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Mercado and Maria de Jesus Mercado; his sisters, Virginia, Margarita, and Maria; his brother, Ruben; and his great-grandson, Michael Mercado III.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years, Carmen Mercado; his sons, Jose Angel Mercado, Jr. and Michael Mercado; his daughters, Esmeralda Mendoza and husband Chris, and Belinda Holliday and husband James; his brother, Daniel Mercado; his sisters, Alma, Leticia, and Anna; his grandchildren, Cristelle, Desiree, Michael, Camryn, Marcus, Chris, Coen, Kristen, and Caleb; and his great-grandchildren, Haley, Madilyn, Julian, Alaina, Abriela, and Gael.
Jose also leaves behind numerous extended family members and a wide circle of cherished friends.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing him and the privilege of creating lasting memories together. His legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
"My great grandpa was such a special person in my life. He was wise, strong, and full of love, always ready with a smile or kind words. He made me feel safe and cared for, and I’ll never forget the way he could brighten up a room just by being there. Even though I’ll miss him deeply, I’ll carry his love and memories with me forever. He wasn’t just my great grandpa—he was my hero, and I’ll always be proud to be his great grandchild." Madi
"Popo was an amazing grandpa we had many memories that I would never forget about, he would take care of or buy us stuff at the store, he would make us laugh or make us smile out of his personality ,he was bold and confident in many ways but in general he was an amazing grandpa." Caleb
