To know Joe was to laugh. He had a joke for every occasion-and sometimes for no occasion at all. Whether it was a quick one-liner or a long story with an unexpected punchline, he could always make you smile. His sense of humor, sharp wit, and infectious laughter lit up every room he entered.
He never met a stranger. From checkout lines to customer service , Joe had a way of turning brief encounters into meaningful conversations. People were drawn to his kindness, his stories, and the warmth that radiated from him. He had a rare gift for making others feel seen and valued.
Above all, Joe was a family man. A devoted husband to Merrill of 48 years, a proud father to Amie, Jessica, Ashley, and a loving papa to Blake, Baylee, Mason, Bennett, and Graham. His greatest joy was being surrounded by those he loved. He was the kind of dad who showed up to fix anything, the kind of papa who enjoyed supporting his grandkids at baseball games and cheer competitions:, and the kind of husband who loved deeply and unconditionally.
Though our hearts ache with his absence, we take comfort in the countless memories he gave us-silly jokes, warm hugs, good morning sunshine, daily sing alongs, and the example of how to live with love and laughter.
He will be deeply missed, but his spirit, humor, and love will live on in all of us who had the privilege to know him.
A graveside service of Joe's life will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at B'nai Israel Cemetery at 2:30 pm. The address is 2718 Cromwell Road Norfolk, Virginia. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed starting at 2:30 pm at facebook.com/hdoliverfuneralapts.
