Joseph M. Azzato Jr., affectionately known as Joe to his friends and family, passed away on April 14, 2025, in Austin, Texas, due to complications related to Crohns. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 2, 1949, Joe lived a life defined by service, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to those around him.
Joe proudly served his country as a Target Intelligence Officer in the United States Air Force from 1970 until his retirement in 1992, achieving the rank of Major. Following the events of 9/11, he answered the call once more, returning to duty for an additional two years. Throughout his military career, he earned the respect of his peers through his integrity, work ethic, and deep patriotism. In civilian life, Joe carried those same values into his second career as a Quality Assurance Analyst in cybersecurity, where he became known for his meticulous attention to detail and generous spirit.
An alumnus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Joe earned his Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Arts, a reflection of his lifelong passion for learning and creative expression. His love for history and the arts remained a constant throughout his life, shaping both his professional and personal pursuits.
Joe was a true creative at heart. A tinkerer and builder, he was happiest when working with his hands, whether capturing moments through photography, acting in local film productions, or simply fixing something around the house. His artistic eye and joyful spirit infused everything he did, and his willingness to share his talents brought warmth and inspiration to his community. He also volunteered generously at his local church, offering both his time and his heart to those in need.
More than anything, Joe was a devoted family man. He shared 43 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Tess, in a marriage grounded in love, laughter, and mutual support. Together they raised their son, Michael, instilling in him the values of compassion, ingenuity, and integrity. Joe's joy only grew with the arrival of his granddaughters, Kara and Alanna, who brought endless light into his life and whom he cherished with all his heart.
Joe's presence was a gift, his kindness, wisdom, and humor left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He lived fully and loved deeply, and though his passing leaves an unfillable void, his spirit continues to live on through the many lives he touched. In moments of creativity, acts of service, and the warmth of family, we will continue to feel Joe's steady, loving, and inspiring presence.
Joseph M. Azzato Jr. was a remarkable man who lived with intention and heart. His legacy is one of devotion, art, and grace. Though we grieve his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in his stories we will continue to share.
