Joseph P. Basarab, 80, of Oak Valley, passed away, on Friday, May 2, 2025.
Devoted father of Jennifer Basarab and Julie (Dwayne) Gauthier. Dear brother of Maria (Kevin) Beers. Loving grandfather of Laurielle (Joe) Connolly, Alayna Allen, Kyle Gauthier and Zach Gauthier. Loving great grandfather of Michael and Celine Connolly. Loving uncle of Kimberly (Ian) Castano and Jason (Ishani) Beers. Loving great uncle of Ivy and Dorian Castano. Also surviving is his beloved cat Spike.
Joe (Joey) was born in Philadelphia on March 14,1945 to the late Joseph and Julia (Smeresky) Basarab. He attended St. Barnabas Catholic School in Southwest Philadelphia until his family moved to Oak Valley in 1959. Joe graduated from Deptford High School in 1963. He enjoyed playing baseball, football and basketball in high school. He went on to work for Hermann's trucking company in Pennsauken for many years.
Joe was a devoted father to his two daughters. Life became even more joyful when he became a grandfather, cherishing every moment as he watched his family grow. He felt truly blessed to welcome two great-grandchildren into his life. Throughout his life, he took his role as big brother to heart. He enjoyed being an uncle and sharing in the milestones in their lives.
Joe never passed up a chance to show a card trick, share a funny story, or offer a few words of wisdom. He could often be found chatting with neighbors along Georgetown Road.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Thursday, May 8th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 AM. At the request of the family, the burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory may be made to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, 1200 N. Delsea Dr., Glassboro, NJ 08028 @ https://www.gloucestercountynj.gov/160/Animal-Shelter
