Joseph Robert Burks, 74, passed away on December 30, 2024. Born on May 24, 1950, in Malvern, Arkansas, Joseph was the beloved son of Earl and Devora Burks and one of nine siblings.
After graduating high school, Joseph answered the call of duty and was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. During his time in the service, he met the love of his life, Yecha Hwang. Their union was blessed with two daughters.
Upon returning to the United States, Joseph began a dedicated career as a deco man, working on the aluminum parts assembly line for various businesses. His work ethic was unmatched, as he consistently arrived two hours early to his 12-hour shifts, putting in decades of 14-hour workdays before retiring in 2008. His career took his family from Malvern to Chicago and eventually to the Kansas City area, where they made their home.
Joseph’s life revolved around his family, and he cherished every moment spent with them—unless the Kansas City Chiefs or Royals were playing, of course! He had a passion for collecting, amassing baseball cards, coins, figurines, and any treasured keepsakes from his grandchildren.
Joseph will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, quiet strength, and the profound love he had for his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Yecha; daughter, Sue (Nathan) Aagesen; step-son, Thomas (Muoi Tran) Goudy; grandchildren, Andrew Scholler, Yetta Scholler, Annika Aagesen and Mason Aagesen; two siblings, and numerous extended family and friends. He joins in Heaven his parents; daughter, Sheri Steele; and 7 siblings.
A celebration of Joseph’s life will be held at Terrace Park Cemetery - Lakeside Chapel on Saturday, January 4th with visitation at 8:30am, followed by funeral service at 9am with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Terrace Park in care of his family.
