JOSEPH D. CALCAGNO
AKWESASNE- Joseph Dino Calcagno, 93, of 378 SR 37, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Joseph was born on November 18, 1931, in Manhattan, NY, son of the late John Calcagno and Dorothy (Jock) Smith. He attended Mohawk school and was a graduate of Bombay High School. He joined the US Army in 1948 and served until his honorable discharge in 1950. He married Joan Richmond in 1953 and had six children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1965. He then married Helen L. Cole on October 7, 1967, in Detroit, MI. Helen predeceased him on January 11, 2011.
Upon his return from the military, he worked at Alcoa for five years, where he attended Alcoa Industrial Mechanics school for four years, through a program setup by Clarkson University to earn a two-year Mechanical Engineering degree. Joseph was an Iron Worker by trade, but a true musician at heart. He then went to work at the Seaway in 1956 and later moved to Detroit, MI, where he transferred from Local 448 to Local 25 and worked until his retirement in 1992, when he was working at Disney in Florida.
Joseph was a skilled musician, with a passion for playing guitar, bass, and the piano. He played in many local Motown bands and was the last surviving member of the Thundertones. He also fixed and repaired fiddles and guitars.
He is survived by his children, Anthony Calcagno, Dorothy Carrigan, Donnia Prairie, Debra Lavier and Dorrina Moore; and his chosen son George Tooker.
Besides his parents John and Dorothy, he was predeceased by a son David Calcagno at birth, and his brother Bill Calcagno.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home on Thursday, from 12noon until 3 PM where a funeral service will be held at 3PM.
