Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parker-Millard Funeral Service and Crematory on Jul. 29, 2023.
Bishop Josef M. Carr, Sr., of
Columbia, Missouri was called to rest July 26, 2023, at University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics. He was born on June 8, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Thomas Hendricks and Dorothy Patterson and raised by Anna Broadus (Coleman).
He was called to preach at the age of nine, with a foundation in the Church of God in Christ, and the Missionary Baptist Church. At a young age, Bishop Carr was kept close under the tutelage of Bishop Lewis H. Ford and Rev. Clay Evans. He was well tutored and educated. Although called at a young age, he ran from his calling for many years, finally preaching his initial message when he was 38 years old! God brought him through and out of numerous experiences during his lifetime.
Bishop Carr was licensed to preach in March 1989 and ordained in 1987 as a Gospel Preacher, while serving in the United Community Baptist Church. He acknowledged Bishop Russell L. Freeman as his father in the ministry. During his tenure there he served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible study teacher and musician with the choir. He headed up the Evangelism Department and had many other assignments as well.
He served as the preacher for and president of the Mt. Carmel District Missionaries. He also served as Pastor in many churches throughout Missouri and evangelized across the nation. He continued to evangelize as long as the Lord allowed him to.
Reverend Carr was elevated to the office of Bishop in July 2005, where he was consecrated to the office as Bishop of Evangelism of the Spoken Word Ministerial Fellowship. He was a founding member of the Spirit of Christ Ministerial Council of Churches, where he served as Bishop of Pastoral Care.
Bishop Carr had recently organized and served as Senior Pastor of Christ for Crisis Ministry, and the Tabernacle of Praise Church. Christ for Crisis Ministry is a holistic ministry which focuses on counseling for drug imprisoned individuals, the spouse abused, child abused, alcoholic, and the hurting. For there is a Christ for all crisis, He is the only answer!
Bishop Carr's educational experience comes out of an urban background. Living through the testimony of what God has brought him out of and through. His formal education includes an Honorary Doctor of Divinity, conferred by the World Christianship Ministries in Chicago, IL. It was awarded for his work done in the urban area of the South and North sides of his hometown.
He attended Columbia College where he carried a MSW in Social Work. His Bachelor of Arts degree was focused on Criminal Justice and Psychology with a minor in History. He graduated in 1996, showing his children it is never too late to get your education.
