Joseph Carrubba Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Oct. 20, 2009.

Joseph Carrubba, 79, of Ruckersville, Virginia, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife and three daughters at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, October 18, 2009.

Joe was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 17, 1930.

He was predeceased by his parents, Angelo and Nunziata Carrubba; and by his only brother, Sam Carrubba.

His parents were Sicilian immigrants who raised six children during the Great Depression. Joe was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps. Joe attended Case Western Reserve University and he was a 32nd degree Mason. He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Garrett Carrubba on September 8, more than 58 years ago.

Joe and Norma traveled extensively over the years for business and pleasure. They lived in many interesting places, including many happy years spent in Saudi Arabia, while Joe worked as a Purchasing Agent for The Arabian American Oil Company in Dhahran. Joe and Norma moved from Houston, Texas, to Charlottesville in 1989.

Joe loved and enjoyed life. He was a wonderful father and took great joy in his 11 grandchildren.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife, Norma; his three loving daughters and their families, Patricia Carrubba and her husband, Eric Breckoff, of Palmyra, Virginia, Nancy Bowman and her husband, Gary Bowman, of Roanoke, Virginia, and Dahna Carrubba and her husband, John Howie, of Katy, Texas.

Also surviving are his adoring grandchildren, Kyle Hultman and his wife, Morgan, Normajean, Fletcher and Schuyler Hultman, Honor, Hope and Glory Bowman and Spencer, Hunter, Grace and Bella Howie; one great- grandson, his namesake, Joseph Hultman, who brought much joy to "Boompa" over the last five years.

He is also survived by four sisters, Millie Geiger, Josephine Carrubba, Rose Giordano and Anna Loparo all of Cleveland, Ohio; a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fowler of Altamonte Springs, Florida; and a host of nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

The family wishes to thank Joe's kind and compassionate caregiver, Mrs. Sarah Johnson, Hospice of the Piedmont, his University of Virginia Physicians and to all who have helped to make Joe's final days on Earth more comfortable.

A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at St. Paul's Church, 851 Owensville Road, Ivy, Virginia, with the Reverend H. Miller Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to either the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911; St. Paul's Church, P.O. Box 37, Ivy, Virginia 22945; or the Greene County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 302, Stanardsville, Virginia 22973 in Joe's memory.

We know that we shall see our Daddy again in Heaven.

Ryan Funeral Home in Ruckersville, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
