Obituary J. Stephen Cathey
Joseph Stephen Cathey, 87, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025 in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Stephen was born October 15, 1937 in Riverside, Idaho, the son of Wayne Maurice Cathey and Zula Wilson Cathey.
Steve was raised in the Riverside area where he attended schools. He graduated from Blackfoot High School. He continued his education at Idaho State University. He then enlisted in the Idaho National Guard.
On December 6, 1953, Steve and Myrna Rogers were married in Riverside, Idaho. The couple were married for over 71 years. Myrna passed away just two weeks prior to Steve's death on February 5.
As a young man, Steve farmed and ran the projector at the Nuart theatre. He then went to work at the INL, starting as a pipefitter, then as an equipment operator. He retired from the INL as an engineer.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Steve enjoyed rebuilding Ford Mustangs, finding the worst and fixing them to be the best. He enjoyed traveling and was a great handyman. He loved spending time in the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He especially loved spending time at their cabin in Island Park.
Steve is survived by his children, Sheryle (Rex) Callister, Blaine (Annette) Cathey, Brent (Sandra) Cathey, Kenneth (Heidi) Cathey and Kristene (Earl) Ferrin; a sister, Jeanette Rutau; sisters-in-law Marilynn (Marc) Carroll and Miriam Rowbury; brother-in-law Jack Mattson; 17 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Myrna Cathey; his son, Stephen Ray Cathey; sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Glenn Parker; sister-in-law, Memory Mattson; granddaughter Rishelle Jade Jones and great grandson Caden Ratcliff.
The family would like to thank Homestead Restaurant for their patience and the staff at The Willows for their caring and kindness.
