Joseph Cullinane "Buddy" Cave, 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family. Born in Washington, D.C., on September 20, 1945, he was the devoted son of Edward Francis and Anne Cecilia Cave, and the brother to Edward Lee, Charlie, MaryAnne, Bob, and Jerry.

Buddy's devotion to family was the heart of his life. He was the loving husband of Margaret "Peggy" Bligh Cave, and a proud father to Christopher (J'lene) and Betsy (John). He was affectionately known as "Bud" to his treasured triplet grandchildren-Amelia, Ethan, and Claire-who brought him immeasurable joy. He was also a beloved brother-in-law to the many wonderful Bligh sisters.

His love for family shone in countless ways, from his thoughtful gifts to his knack for finding the perfect Maryland shirt or crab-patterned pants. His generosity, humor, impeccable style, and unwavering grace as a true gentleman touched everyone around him.

A proud Marine, Buddy was stationed at Camp LeJune and Camp Pendleton before attending the Defense Language Institute in California, where he studied Vietnamese to serve as a radio telegraph operator during the Vietnam War. He served honorably in the Marine Corps and carried with him the values of honor, courage, and commitment, living them with integrity throughout his entire life.

Professionally, Buddy excelled as a civil engineer, leading major construction projects across Washington, D.C., and Maryland, as well as in California-Newport Beach, Los Angeles, Roseville, and Palm Springs-along with projects in Hawaii, Arizona, and internationally in China and Thailand. He was also an expert in analyzing and resolving contracts for large-scale projects, ensuring their success with precision, integrity, and deep professional skill.

His love of history and his stories enriched the lives of his children and grandchildren, who carry forward his curiosity and appreciation for learning. An avid athlete, Buddy thrived on the open road as a cyclist, runner, and swimmer. Irvine, where Buddy and his family moved in 1980, was the perfect setting for him to enjoy all his activities year-round. He proudly completed marathons and triathlons, finding special joy in running the Marine Corps Marathon alongside his brother, Bob, was a highlight of his athletic pursuits.

Above all, Buddy's life was marked by devotion and love for his wife. He cared tirelessly for Peggy in the years following her strokes, showing a depth of loyalty and tenderness that inspired all who knew him. His greatest pride was his role as "Bud," where he created memories full of fun, laughter, and unconditional love with Amelia, Ethan, and Claire.

Buddy Cave will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his enduring service, and the strength and presence of a true gentleman who touched all who knew him.
