His priestly assignments included Corpus Christi/Sacred Heart Parish in Wethersfield and the Torrington cluster of churches as Parochial Vicar. He then served the parish of St. Bernard in Tariffville as Parochial Vicar and then later Administrator and Pastor. He retired from active ministry in 2015 at the age of 77.

Joseph Cretella was my Spanish language teacher back in 1969 and 1970, freshman and sophomore years, when I was a student at North Branford High School. He was also the leader of a class trip a group of us took to Spain. I will always remember him a kind, fun loving man and an excellent teacher who truly cared about his students. Also, I am happy to learn that when the time was right, Rev. Cretella was ordained into the clergy. I know that was something he wanted for a very long time. My condolences to the family.

Rest in glory Father Jay. It was always a joy to see you at 08:30 Sunday Mass at St. John the Baptist parish in Madison, AL. I also enjoyed walking you to your daughter´s car at the end of Mass. Well done, good and faithful servant! May Christ the great high priest welcome you to the new and eternal Jerusalem.
