Joseph Dagata Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Riczo Funeral Homes on Mar. 16, 2026.
Our beloved family-first Dad, guided by his faith in Jesus Christ and his God-given gift for kindness, has continued onto the next stage of his eternal journey. On March 12, 2026, he quietly passed from this mortal life with family at his side.

Age 80. Dad is faithful husband to Susan (nee Hermanson); father to Pamela Crouse (Doug), Matthew, Guy (Yayoi), and Stacie Metz (Jordan); grandfather to Stephanie, Kelton, Caden, Dallin, Sawyer, Eilee, Maverick, Walker, Kaito, Wesley, and Miyu; son to the late Angelo and Carmella (nee Ottobre); Brother to Michael (deceased), Frank (Judy), Tom, and Marie (deceased); cherished brother-in-law to Sharon Taylor (Jim); Uncle Joe to, Brigham (Kelly), Christie (Mark), and Jon (Becci); Friend to all; and loved son of God.

Throughout his mortality, Dad served others, always putting them first with much consideration and a sincere, heartfelt desire to put a smile on the face of everyone he met. He was kind without regard to station in life. From the cleaning person to his doctors, he showed love by inquiring about their families and leaving them with a joke or two. He frequently contacted friends and family members to check in and see how they were doing. He strived to follow the example of Jesus Christ by loving his neighbors and in doing good to all he came across.

Dad was a lifelong teacher, beginning at a young age, as he helped his brother, Mike, understand the world around him. Dad served for more than 30 years as an educator for the Parma City School District. He was affectionately known as "Mr. D" during his time teaching biology and coaching basketball at Schaaf Jr. High School, Parma Senior High School, and Normandy High School. He continued to educate at Cleveland State and Tri-C. Finally, he consistently advised and enlightened his children and grandchildren with patience, love, and compassion. Educating was a passion of his, and he often said he would do it without compensation. He considered himself fortunate to be able to enjoy it as a career.

Dad was an exemplary Father, Husband, Uncle, Brother, Grandfather, and friend. Always ready to tell a joke, make a call, or give support. He is greatly missed by those in his sphere of influence. The mark he leaves on this world makes it a better place.

There will be a service of remembrance held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 501 Rockside Rd, Seven Hills, Ohio, on Saturday, March 21, at 1:00 p.m. Please bring fond memories and stories to share. Feel free to incorporate the color turquoise into your attire, as it was Dad's favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Holy Family Hospice, 6707 State Rd, Parma, OH 44134
