Joseph Patrick Eugene Dunne
Joseph Patrick Dunne passed away peacefully on September 27th, 2024 at the age of 87 surrounded by his loving family. "A man of few words a few million" always bringing smiles to faces of loved ones and strangers alike. Joseph Dunne, affectionately known as "Pop-Pop, "Uncle Joe," and "Sonny" to family and friends, was born on May 24th, 1937 to Joseph and Margaret Dunne. Born prematurely and weighing less than three pounds, Joseph defied the odds from the very beginning, going on to live a life full of resilience, joy, and unwavering faith, inspiring everyone who knew him. He grew up in Washington Heights, New York as the youngest of four children who included Angela Knoth, Josephine Neigel, and Irene Mallon. He cherished his childhood memories including their countless trips together to Port Henry, New York.
His deep love for his country was exemplified through his service in the United States Army and later in the Army Reserves. He proudly enlisted and served until his honorable discharge in 1967, embodying the true spirit of patriotism and commitment. In 1955, Joseph graduated from Murray-Hall Vocational High School, setting the stage for a distinguished career at Hoffman LaRoche as both an Electrician and Electrical Inspector. His expertise and dedication didn't end with his retirement-he eagerly shared his wealth of knowledge by teaching aspiring electricians. His contributions were celebrated when he was honored with the prestigious twelfth annual Man of the Year Award by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, a reflection of his lasting impact on the field and his community. Joseph married the love of his life, Eleanor M. Dunne (née Lepple) in October 1963 and together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage, raising their three boys. They started their marriage in Wayne, New Jersey, in a home Joseph proudly built with his father. After many wonderful years, they moved to Pompton Plains, eventually settling into retirement in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. As a family, they delighted in many camping trips, covering the entire East Coast of the United States. As the family grew, adding six grandchildren, he treasured family vacations: Dewey Beach, Joe's Pond, Williamsburg and Disney World.
Joseph served as Scoutmaster for his sons' Boy Scout troop with passion and commitment. Under his leadership and guidance, each of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his influence and the values he instilled. Joseph lived a life deeply rooted in faith as a devoted member of the Catholic Church, proudly professing his love for Christ and sharing his beliefs with those in his community. Joseph shared the Eucharist as a Eucharistic Minister for many years, compassionately serving the homebound, nursing homes, and hospitals in recent years. Joseph was a proud participant and leader of Cursillo, a Christian faith-based retreat. He was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council located in Wayne, New Jersey where he participated in fundraising, volunteering, and charity efforts through the organization.
In his spare time, Joseph enjoyed listening to music from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, surf fishing, watching old movies, and spending time with his dog Gracie. His life was a testament to the importance of family and friends, always placing them at the heart of everything he did. Whether it was hosting lively gatherings, offering support during tough times, or simply sharing laughter over a meal, his warmth and generosity created lasting bonds and unforgettable memories.
Joseph is predeceased by his wife Eleanor, his parents, three older sisters and their husbands. He is survived by his three sons William Dunne (Patricia), Jeffrey Dunne, and Kevin Dunne (Linda), six grandchildren, furry companion Gracie, and an abundance of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing on October 11th, 2024 at 10:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, 362 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp.
