Joseph L. Dunton, Jr., was known as "Jody," "Black," and "Smoke," but known to the community as "Mr. Ice Cream Man." He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Joseph L. Dunton, Jr., was born on June 4, 1964, and raised in Eastville, Virginia, the son of the late Joseph and Edith Dunton. At an early age, Joseph attended Bethel AME Church in Eastville, Virginia. He was a Junior Choir member and a member of the Heavenly Arms Choir. He attended and graduated from Northampton County High School. He joined and served three years in the U. S. Army. We definitely can not forget his favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

He met and married Carmen Dunton. He was employed at Northampton County High School as a cafeteria worker, and he also coached the wrestling team at Northampton County High School. He was a caretaker for Eyre Hall Farms in Cheritan, Virginia. He sold ice cream in Northampton and Accomack counties. If there was a child who didn't have money to by ice cream, Jody would give that child ice cream because that's who Jody was, a loving, caring person.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories: his wife, Carmen Dunton; two sons, Derek Smith (Katrina) of Michigan and Fontawine Foeman of Oregon; two daughters, Varnesha Foeman of Birdsnest, VA, and Brittany Foeman of Harevally, VA; five sisters, Cheryl Dewarren of Machipongo, VA, Tara Braddy (Willie) of South Carolina, Linda White (Ronnie) of Weirwood, VA, Alisa Foeman (Anthony) of Eastville, VA, Lana Scurry (Charlie) of Orlando, Florida; one brother, Michael Dunton (Melanie) of Richmond, VA; two sons that he also took as his own, Antonio and Walter Smith; one aunt, Eula Mae Weeks; two uncles, William B. Sunkins (Louise) and Milton Dunton; nine grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lynette Foeman and Tonia Nottingham; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Edith Dunton; and niece, Patrice Dunton. We will always remember the love he shared. He will be deeply missed. A special thank you to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, to Ms. Louise Hayman, Dan Brown, Amy Brant and family, the entire Baldwin family, and all of the other people who he came into contact with, including special friend, Gloria Spady.
