On June 28, 2024, of Glassboro. Age 81. Beloved husband of Camille (nee Montano). Devoted father of Joseph J. Flaherty (Terry), Camille Banks (Thomas), Dawn Flaherty-Faldetta (Joseph). Loving grandfather of Thomas (Denise), Matthew, Brandon (Michaela), Ashley (Christopher), Joseph (Gianna), Blaine (Sol), Summer, Rayna, Sophia, and Isabella. Proud great-grandfather of Paige, Eli, Stella, Oliver, Noah, and Ethan. Dear brother of John (Maryann), Rosemary, Theadora, Emma, Francis (the late Madeline), Philamena (Robert), Billy, Leo (Sharon) and the late Margaret (the late Richard).
Joseph was all about his family! Not only his wife and children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but his extended family as well. He was very proud to be a part of this close knit family with 9 brothers and sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He was everyone's friend. He treated everyone like family and would do anything for you. He held many titles including husband, father, uncle, coach and friend. He was often called "Curly" because if he didn't know somebody by name yet, he would call them "Curly"! "Hey Curly "
Another passion of his was his race horses! For a long time he frequented the race track both in NJ and in Florida. He owned a farm in Franklinville where he had his horses. He loved watching his horses train and in the races. He loved all animals and often brought a lost dog or injured animal home for his family to help take care of.
Most people would refer to him as being quite "A Character" because he was so honest and called "a spade is a spade" and always made people laugh (sometimes while shaking their head of course). Only Joe could get away with the things he said or did. He was highly respected for this! He was a wiz at numbers. He could do math in his head quicker than anyone can on a calculator. That would always prompt one of his favorite quotes "I went to Neuman class of 60". Another saying he enjoyed was "That was adequate at best"
He reminisced about being an athlete when he was young. He told many stories of his childhood athletic prowess. He really enjoyed basketball, baseball and football and continued to enjoy watching them when he got older and wasn't playing. "He was known for being a "Damn good player". He coached baseball & basketball for his son's little league teams.
He loved being a snow bird since his retirement from the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 2002. He enjoyed going to Florida where he lived in "His Chicken Coop" for the winter months. In the summer months they lived in New Jersey at his Cypress Ct. house. He hosted many parties, celebrations and get-togethers at the pool and cabana in his backyard.
He will be remembered by his ability to make everyone he came into contact with feel like family.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Wednesday 10:00-11:00 AM at Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, 1121 Jackson Street, Philadelphia, PA. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM.
