Obituary for Joseph Gerald
Joseph Gerald, 87, of Randolph passed away on November 29.
Joe "Bitty" was born in Baker Hill on the Island of Montserrat. His parents were, John Henry Gerald (Better known as Harry Mark) and Elizabeth O'Garro. Joseph is the last surviving of his siblings. Edith,
Mary and Ellen who were raised in Antigua and Charlie, Peter, George and Mary also known as Ellen who were raised in Montserrat. (Apparently, they liked to use the same names over and over.) Joseph attended Cavalla Hill Primary School through 7th Standard where he got the nickname "Teacher Joe" because though he was often absent from school due to helping with family responsibilities, or just
not having shoes to wear, when he returned to school, he knew the work he had missed and could often help the other students with their work.He was interested in current events and carried a radio on the job so he
always knew what was happening. After he left school, Joseph worked at various jobs including at
MORECO or Montserrat Real Estate Company building roads for the development at Olveston. He also helped at other business establishments such as Miss Annie's bread shop. In the evenings after work, he would congregate with other men in Cudjoe Head to discuss local politics and other events. We've been told by many of those men that when it was time to go home, he would summon the younger men especially by saying "Boys! Vacate!" He was known to have a quick sense of humor. Joseph migrated to the US in the mid 1970's and lived in the Boston area. He worked in Malden then in Roxbury at Modern Electroplating until he retired. He was always loyal to family and friends and could be called to assist with any odd jobs that were needed. Joseph never married or had children of his own, but he took a special interest in his younger sister's children Laura, George and Sharon, and always made sure they were doing well, especially after Ellen died in 1982. He did the same for some of his friends' children, inquiring about their progress in school and buying them treats. He loved being around friends and family and would often walk to visit his cousin William Browne at his shop and spend hours there. He spoke often about returning to his beloved Baker Hill, but his health deteriorated over the past several years and he passed away peacefully on November 29th, 2025 in the presence of family. He leaves to cherish his memories, his many nieces and nephews especially
Laura, George, and Sharon of Massachusetts, the children of his brothers and sisters in Montserrat, Antigua, and London. He is also fondly remembered by his many cousins, friends and extended family.
