Joseph G. Gild

Joseph Gerard Gild, 66, of Mogadore, Ohio, passed away May 7, 2024. Born February 14, 1958, at Akron, Ohio to the late Nora (nee Ruhmanseder) and Abraham Gild. Joe grew up in Akron and was a 1976 graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School. His first job was at his father's pizza shop, A Gild Pizza.
Joe joined the US Army and graduated in 1981 as a 19D Cavalry Scout from Fort Knox, Kentucky. While serving he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for his time in Honduras, and the NCOA Award of merit. The Non-Commissioned Officers Association
annually recognizes one enlisted member from each of the uniformed service for acts of heroism He then went on to serve in the 107TH Air Cavalry, becoming an OH-58 helicopter crew chief until the regiment deactivated in 1994. He also served as one of the original members of the Counterdrug Task Force in the early 1990s in Stark County. He retired as Staff Sergeant in 2004.
Joe worked as an aviation maintenance technician for Medevac, University Hospitals and PHI, retiring in 2023. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Technology from Kent State University in 2005.
Joe loved his four children unconditionally - supporting their various actives and hobbies over the years. His favorite role was Grandpa to his five grandchildren.
He enjoyed cooking, canning maple syrup, bonfires, working on cars, spending time with his dad in the pizza shop, flying helicopters, comedies, a nice bourbon with friends, great conversation and most importantly helping friends or family in need. He loved listening to music – favorites including Roxy Music, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Warren Zevon, and Weird Al.
Joe is survived by his four children, Allen, Brian, Lauren Banar (Chris), and Catherine Cherevko (Jon); Five grandchildren, Connar, Priscilla, Graceland, Naomi, and Sofia; and beloved dogs, Aja and Bijou. Joe is also survived by his sisters Anita and Mary.
Calling hours will be on Friday 5/17,11-1 and service ai 1:00 p.m. in the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St.). Inurnment with military honors will follow immediately in Holy Cross Cemetery.
