With sorrow, we announce the passing of Joseph Vincent Grega of Opelika, Ala. Born Jan. 24, 1948, in Scranton to Vincent and Helen (Kashmer) Grega, he died Sept. 4, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, Ga., following a head injury.
Preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, Joe is survived by his wife, Milly; brothers, David, Ronald, Vince, and Brian; daughters, Alicia (and granddaughters, Miranda and Frances Pikul) and Stacy (and grandson, Ethan Enslin); and sons, Justin and Beau.
A 1965 Dunmore High School graduate, Joe studied English at the University of Scranton before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a Captain flying B-52s in the Vietnam War and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart after his aircraft was struck by a surface-to-air missile near Hanoi on Dec. 18, 1972. Despite injuries aboard, he completed the mission and landed safely in friendly territory.
Joe loved books — collecting more than 6,000 — along with hiking, travel, and adventurous cooking. He was known for "piloting" his car, to the alarm of passengers. A Mahayana Buddhist, he devoted his life to service, compassion, and helping others. His curiosity, kindness, and generosity leave a lasting legacy.
A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Tripp House, 1011 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with storytelling at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a donation to PBS or the American Red Cross.

I knew Joe from the weekly meditation group at Ollie. He was a gentle and lovely man, and we will miss him in our group. I know Scranton well, and wish I could be there, but send loving thoughts and appreciation for the kindness of Joe, and appreciation of his humor and thoughtfulness.

Joe was a wise and empathic member of our meditation group in Auburn. His thoughtful reflections contributed depth to our discussions, and he helped to shape our shared practice. I will miss his presence.
