Joseph Edward Gummerson Jr. age 88 died in his home, overlooking Lake Superior on September 17, 2025. His life ended the way he lived it – with peace, dignity and grace. He was born on April 8, 1937 to parents Joseph Sr., and Mercedes (Baker) Gummerson in Peoria, IL. He married the love of his life, Mary Kay Ponsolle on July 25, 1981. Joe worked as an area forester and fire specialist for the Minnesota DNR, devoting his life to the care of both people and the natural world. He was most at peace along the banks of a trout stream, learning more about patience and presence than catching fish.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim; son, James; and daughter, Theresa. Joe is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Debra (Tim) Robbins, Mary Jo Norrell, Susan (Steve) Verado; sister, Mary Heyl; brothers-in-law, Mark (Carol) Ponsolle and John (Michelle) Ponsolle; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 26th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Boat Club Restaurant, 600 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802.
