On January 9, 2023, at the age of 29, Joseph "Joey" Elroy Hiett, beloved son, grandson, brother, nephew, friend, and neighbor, passed away.
He is survived by his father and step-mother, Joseph Hiett and Sonia Shearer-Hiett, mother, Catherine Kowalski, and sister, Katie Hiett. He and Katie were like old friends who got together and laughed about the life in which they grew up and movies they both loved. They were a support to each other, much different from when they would torture each other as little kids! He is also survived by his grandmother, Leslie Leyva in Seattle, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
As an adult, Joey was especially close to his grandparents, Wayne and Cora Hiett. Cora passed away in July of 2021 while Joey was deployed. We take comfort in knowing Joey is with her in heaven now.
Joey grew up in Missoula and graduated from Sentinel High School in May 2012. He enjoyed sports from a young age. He really loved wrestling, and was a four year Varsity Letter holder and all state wrestler. When not busy with sports, Joey was playing video games with his XBox buddies and best friend, T.J. Bordner. Joey's love for video games made him many friends from coast to coast. They also cherish the memories of him.
After High School, Joey attended Montana State University, and transferred back to the University of Montana. (Go Griz!) Joey was handy at building and repairing anything, and creating animal mounts. He also sold Real Estate for a time with Missoula Realty.
In February of 2021, Joey fulfilled his lifelong dream to become a Marine. He joined the Marine Reserves. Joey immediately excelled in the Marines, earning their respect by his hardworking dedication and being a brother in arms. Prior to his passing, he returned from a nine month deployment to the areas around Cuba, Panama, and Ecuador. OORAH!
Joey's love for the outdoors only grew as he got older. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his most beloved and adored lab, Ally, were responsible for the early demise of many ducks and geese! Joey enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska with his dad, good friend Nick Alonzo, and his sons, Brock and Taylor Alonzo. Joey, family, and friends, hunted all over Montana making traditions and memories.
The service for Joey will be held on Saturday 1/28/23 at 11:00 a.m. at Lolo Community Church, located at 11897 Lewis and Clark Drive, Lolo, MT 59847. The service will be followed by a Military Ceremony and a reception, with a tribute and small lunch, in the church gym.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the #22ADay Military Suicide Awareness, or any other charity that supports our Military.
