Joseph "Carmen" Hockersmith, a cherished poet and devoted family man, passed away on October 16, 2025 at the age of 74, at his residence. Born on July 23, 1951, in Yuma, Arizona, he was the son of the late Lilborn Otis Hockersmith and Dorothy Smart Hockersmith. Carmen's journey through life was marked by a deep love for his family and an enduring passion for poetry, which garnered him both silver and golden poet awards and the publishing of a poetry book throughout his career.
Carmen made indelible contributions to his community beyond his written words. He was a proud Taekwondo dad and stayed actively involved as a Boy Scout Troop Leader for Troop 91, guiding and nurturing young minds. Those who knew him affectionately referred to him as "Mr. Fixit," as he had a knack for tinkering with small engines, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. His adventurous spirit drew him to both the beach and the mountains, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones.
Carmen's legacy lives on through his children, Daniel Hockersmith (Lauren), Cora Moss (Jeffrey), April Dawn Pina (Fiance, Jeffrey Crane), and Lisa Macario. He is also survived by his sisters, Cynthia and Julie, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in his heart. His pride in his family was evident, as he frequently expressed his love for them, highlighting the joy they brought into his life.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol "Jeanie" Hockersmith; daughter, Cathy Jean; sisters, Virginia and Beverly; and brother, Fred. Carmen's warmth and generosity will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Gathering will be held in his honor on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral & Cremation Services located at 101 Oak Grove St., Mt. Holly, NC 28120. Friends and family are invited to come together to celebrate the life and contributions of Joseph "Carmen" Hockersmith.
