Riddle Funeral Home & Cremation Services - VermilionJoseph L. Hoffman, 81, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Ohio Veterans Home following a brief illness.
He was born January 5, 1944, in Cleveland, OH, and had recently made his home in Sandusky, moving from Avon.
A proud and decorated veteran of the United States Army, Specialist Four Joseph Hoffman honorably served his country for nearly seven years, including active duty during the Vietnam War as a member of the renowned 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division — the “Screaming Eagles.” Trained as an infantryman and military parachutist, he earned the Parachutist Badge, Expert Marksmanship Badge, and Infantry Shoulder Cord.
During his Vietnam deployment from 1968 to 1969, Joseph participated in three major campaigns—the Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase VI, the Tet 69 Counteroffensive, and the Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969—for which he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal from the Republic of Vietnam.
For his actions under enemy fire during the Tet 69 Counteroffensive, Joseph was awarded the Air Medal and two Bronze Star Medals—one with the “V” device for valor—for heroism in combat. On May 13, 1969, under heavy enemy rocket, mortar, and sapper attack, he risked his life to extinguish a fire threatening an ammunition pit, preventing catastrophic destruction and saving fellow soldiers. His bravery and selflessness reflected the highest traditions of military service. He also earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Medal for his meritorious service and dedication.
His time in the military remained one of the defining experiences of his life, and he carried a deep sense of pride and patriotism throughout the years that followed.
Joseph was a past member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Vermilion. A lifelong Cleveland Indians—now Guardians—fan, he never missed following his team and enjoyed spending time playing cards and sharing laughter with friends and family.
He is survived by his sister, Rosemary (Pete) Zunt Stowers of Vermilion; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Josette Hoffman; his parents, James Zunt and Katherine Hoffman; and his brother, Leroy Zunt.
A memorial service honoring Joseph’s life and service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH 44089. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
