Joseph "Joe" Clayton Benoit, Sr., a revered member of the Groves community, passed away on November 20, 2025, at Oak Groves Nursing Home in Groves, Texas. Born on March 5, 1942, in Port Neches, Texas, Joe lived a full and vibrant life, traversing many paths that brought him joy and connection with those around him.

Joe's dedication to his country was evident through his military service; he served four years in the United States Navy and four years in the United States Coast Guard. After completing his years of service, he began a fulfilling career with Operating Engineers Local #450 as a Heavy Equipment Operator, proudly serving for 29 years before retiring in 1993.

A joyful soul, Joe was known for his infectious laughter and warm personality. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, always ready with a joke that would light up the room and create lasting memories filled with laughter and joy.

In his post-retirement years, Joe found happiness on the golf course, sharing daily rounds with his retired friends. He cherished the time spent deer hunting with his sons-in-law and brothers-in-law, as well as croppie fishing at Toledo Bend. Joe also had a fondness for trips to the casinos, where he enjoyed both the thrill of the game and good company. His love for dance was equally remarkable, as he often graced the floor with enthusiasm and grace.

Joe was a devoted parishioner at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Groves until its closure. He continued to practice his faith alongside his wife, attending Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Port Arthur and Immaculate Conception - St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Groves. He took pride in these spiritual connections and the community they fostered.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Cherlyn Weatherly Benoit, of Groves; daughters, Michelle (Mial) McLeod and Lynn Benoit, both of Nederland; son, Joseph Benoit, Jr., of Port Neches; and stepchildren, Troy LeBouef (Amy) of Toledo Bend and Allison Hudspeth (Kevin) of Lumberton. He is also survived by his sister, Jessica Thompson of Arkansas, and a host of grandchildren: grandsons, Garrett McLeod, Richard Welch, Jr., and Wesley Welch; granddaughter, Carlee Ward; step grandchildren, Lexie LeBouef, Alec LeBouef, Reed Hudspeth (Brenna), and Raegan Hudspeth, and Jonathan (Carmen); as well as great-grandchildren, Brayden, Jax, Jonah, Emma Ward, and Cohen. Joe's loving spirit will also be remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews whom he cherished dearly.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lillian Ross, and his brothers, Jerry and Michael Benoit. His legacy will remain alive in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.

The family will have a visitation on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland located at 1605 Avenue H. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.

In honoring Joseph Clayton Benoit, Sr., we celebrate not only his unwavering spirit and joy but also the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him. His vibrant laughter and loving nature will truly be missed.
