It is with heavy hearts, yet with gratitude for a life well lived, that we share the passing of Joseph Patrick Kirwan ("Joe") on Tuesday, September 30th, due to complications from an upper GI condition. True to his nature, Joe's final moments reflected who he was throughout his life - a man of deep faith, surrounded by family, love, treasured memories, and, fittingly, the timeless voice of Frank Sinatra. To know Joe was to have a loyal friend. He was a great teller of jokes, and a steady source of kindness and unconditional love. He served his country with honor in Vietnam. He had a wonderful knack for making people feel both welcomed and valued. Joe lived with a generosity of spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to be in his orbit. As a husband, father, and grandfather, Joe was more than just a presence in our lives - he was a blessing and a gift. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen (Brady), and his children: John Fitzpatrick (Marge), Michael Fitzpatrick, Mary Pat Stephenson (Scott), and Katie Prescott (Richard). Joe was a proud and devoted grandfather to Aidan, Mary Kelly, Brigid, Griffin, Clare, Meghan, Micky, and Patty, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind his faithful four-legged companion, Patrick the dog, who added his own special kind of comfort and laughter for Joe. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, the Honorable Judge John Kirwan (Helen), and his sister, Jean Pinkelman (Frank). He had a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews, who were always a source of joy and laughter in his life. Joe was also lovingly embraced by his Brady in-laws-Terry (Maryann), Jim (Marilyn), Tish Molloy (Jim), Larry (Carol), John (Dee), and Katie Farkas (George)-who brought him even more family to love and be loved by. We are profoundly thankful for the outpouring of support from so many of you. Your kind words, warmth, and generosity remind us that Joe's spirit lives on not just in us, but in every life he touched. Joe was the kind of person who never had a bad word to say about anyone, always choosing kindness and humor over criticism. He loved people, and people loved him right back. Whether catching up with old friends or running into someone he knew seemingly everywhere in the Detroit area, Joe truly valued the connections he built. His ability to bring joy, laughter, and genuine care into every interaction is what we will all carry forward. Our lives will never be quite the same without Joe, but his legacy is clear. To honor him, we will continue to share a good story, laugh a little louder, be a little kinder, lean into our faith, and never miss an opportunity to celebrate family and friends. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, October 10, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at O'Brien Sullivan Funeral Home 41555 Grand River Novi with a Monaghan KofC Rosary at 7:30pm. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, October 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church 46325 W. Ten Mile Novi. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. www.cskdetroit.org Joe will be deeply missed, but his kind and generous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
