Joseph W. Marshall

October 12, 1941 – February 16, 2026

Joseph W. Marshall, 84, of Lanoka Harbor, NJ, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026.

Joseph was born and raised in Jersey City, the eldest child of Joseph and Margaret Marshall (née Freeman). After graduating from William Dickinson High School, he went on to pursue music/study the trumpet and earned his undergraduate degree from The Julliard School of Music followed by earning both a Master of Arts degree and Professional Doctorate degree from Columbia University.

He began his career as a professional touring musician and later, after starting a family, became a band director and teacher of instrumental music, educating students at Wagner College and Brick Township High School.

Joseph will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend. A highly accomplished lifelong trumpet player who truly loved jazz music, whether that was playing it, listening to his vast record collection with a couple of beers, or attending a live concert. An unpretentious guy who enjoyed his wife's cooking, reading the newspaper, bird watching, taking a walk at the local parks, and family vacations.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Geraldine, and leaves behind his daughter Geraldine (Dini), son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Kimberly, and grandson Bryce. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law Jerome and Lorraine, brothers-in-law Raymond, Thomas, and Richard, nephews and nieces Raymond, Thomas, James, Lisa, Jeffrey, and Amanda. He is also predeceased by his sister Mary, brother-in-law James, and sister-in-law Josephine.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 10:30 – 11:30am at Riggs Funeral Home followed by burial at Good Luck Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a tree can be planted in memory of Joseph Marshall.
