Sending my love and deepest condolences to Joe Mike´s family and friends. Not only was Joe Mike one of my professors at SMC, but he was my mother´s cousin as well.
One of my favorite memories was in his Modern History of Ireland class (where I was the only person with a non-Irish last name). He was telling a story of him and his cousin (my uncle Dennis) in Ireland and fixing plumbing in a cottage after drinking at the pub. He then pointed to me and said "your grandfather or Uncle Jerry could tell this story better. They tell such good stories." I had not told anyone we were related, so the entire class turned around to look at me with their eye big. I am still embarrassed today! :)
The other time my family and I were in Vermont and went out to lunch near Lake Champlain with Joe Mike. He was wearing his collar and he ordered a beer. My brother asked if priests were allowed to drink - but of course, he was an Irish priest. When it came time to pay, him and my mom started arguing who would pay the bill. People in the restaurant were shocked that my mom dared to argue with a priest!
Joe Mike was a gentle and wonderful man. He will be missed by all who had the luck to know him.
